Glossary
General Terms
Actual Cash Value (ACV) - This means that in the event of a covered loss, you'll be paid the current replacement cost of whatever you lost, minus depreciation. (This generally includes the estimated wear and tear on the item damaged or the loss in value of that item because of aging and use). If you replace the item you will be reimbursed the difference of the ACV and the replacement cost.
Deductible - The portion of a covered loss that you agree to pay before the insurance company becomes responsible for payment under the policy. A larger deductible usually means a lower premium. For example, if the covered claim is $1,000 and your deductible is $250, you pay $250 and your insurance company will pay $750.
Liability Protection - This typically provides coverage if you, as an insured person, are legally obligated to pay damages due to bodily injury of others or for damage to their property arising out of a covered loss. For example, you're playing catch with your friends, you throw the ball and it inadvertently crashes through your neighbors' window and breaks something. The property damage you accidentally caused may be covered here.
Additional Living Expenses Coverage - We'll pay the reasonable increase in living expenses necessary to maintain your normal standard of living when a direct physical loss we cover makes your residence premises uninhabitable for up to the amount of time specified in the policy. This may include payments for the additional costs of a place to stay, food and other increased living expenses.
Liability Protection - Provides protection for insured persons who become legally obligated to pay for covered accidental bodily injury or property damage to others. This protection does not cover auto liability claims.
Personal Property Protection - Provides protection against covered loss to movable property like a stereo, bicycle, furniture or clothing. Most Homeowners, Condominium, Mobile home or Renters Insurance Policies set aside special coverage limits for movable personal property, or categories of personal property, like jewelry, money and securities. You can increase the coverage limits for these and other possessions by selecting an Optional Coverage Endorsement to your Homeowners, Condominium, Mobile home or Renters Insurance Policy.
Protection for Other Structures - Protects an insured's structures which are separated from the dwelling by a clear space. Protects structures like a detached garage, storage unit, fence, gazebo...(Exceptions: Renters and Condominium Policy)
Replacement Cost Coverage - In the event of a covered loss, you may be reimbursed for the cost you incur to replace many of your damaged contents with similar property, brand new. The total amount you'd be reimbursed is subject to the terms and conditions of your particular policy, including applicable deductible and coverage limits.
Policy Coverage
Dwelling (referred to as Coverage A in the policy) - Imagine your house on moving day...empty, waiting to be filled. This is the part referred to as Coverage A: your physical home (rooms, fireplaces, tile floors, carpeting, etc.) and the structures attached to it, such as an attached garage.
The amount of coverage assigned to your dwelling should reflect the amount it would cost to completely repair or rebuild your home should it suffer a covered loss. Often this is determined by your home's purchase price plus inflation. However, if it's been a while since you last updated your policy coverage or if you are not sure that your dwelling is adequately covered, you can either check with your agent or Travelers representative.
Other structures (Coverage B) - Not all structures that exist on your property are actually attached to your house. Therefore, Coverage B offers insurance protection for other structures such as a detached garage, gazebo, or storage shed.
Personal property (Coverage C) - This covers your personal possessions such as furniture, clothing and appliances are covered. Certain types of possessions are excluded or have limited coverage. Please see personal property exclusions and limits of coverage for more specific information.
Loss of use (Coverage D) - This coverage is also called Additional Living Expense. Essentially, this pays for your housing and other living expenses (like meals and laundry) if a major loss makes your house uninhabitable and you have to move out temporarily while it's being repaired.
Personal liability (Coverage E) - This provides coverage for bodily injury or property damage for which you are legally responsible. For example, let's say your dog bites someone, a guest falls down your front stairs, or your son throws a ball through your neighbor's window. You are legally responsible for these actions. Personal Liability helps to cover the associated costs of these related damages.
Most homeowner policies provide a minimum of $100,000 of liability protection. However, you can opt to increase this amount. Also Excess Liability Insurance 101 can help you determine whether the liability limits available on your homeowners policy are sufficient for your needs. Of course, an independent agent or Travelers representative is your greatest resource for this evaluation.
Medical payments (Coverage F) - This pays all reasonable and necessary medical expenses for a period of three years from the date of an accident to a person or persons injured while on your property. This coverage does not apply to the insured or regular residents of the insured's household.
Bodily injury - Accidents do happen...and sometimes they happen to other people while at your home, or by a member of your household. This coverage helps to pay for the expenses created in the event that a physical injury to others is caused by you, residents of your household, or your pets.
Property damage - If someone's property is accidentally damaged by you, members of your household, or your pets, your homeowners policy will help to repair or replace it.
